Dear Folks, The idea of a mentor is an ancient one. In Greek mythology, when Odysseus, King of Ithaca, went to battle in the Trojan War, he placed his friend, Mentor, in charge of his son and his kingdom. Today, Mentor has become synonymous with someone who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge with a less experienced person. Mentoring relationships are special and often life-changing. If there is one thing we must do: mentor our youth. ( Which of these 9 Traits would you bank upon ? )

  1. Mentors are an important part of personal and professional development. They are guides through times when people need someone that is able to point them in the right direction. Good mentors are enthusiastic people, enjoying the role they play in helping others achieve their goals.
There are many qualities of a good mentor.

I would go with the following : —-
    1. TRUSTWORTHY – Trust itself is a main and vital building block in human relationships, and one can easily see how a lack of trust can lead to a complete destruction of any and all relationships.
    2. CARING – Feeling cared for helps us care for others, experience more positive emotions, better handle stress and encourages resilience.
    3. UNDERSTANDING – A person of understanding is thoughtful, empathetic, and knowledgeable. Understanding comes from an open, honest attitude and emotional maturity ->>> two things everyone can start working on right now.
    4. Compassionate – As mentors, we can build caring and compassion into our students by talking more about their personal interests and experiences.

***And, this will give us an opportunity to explore together how they can volunteer or get involved in some way.
****As mentors, we can help students see both sides of a situation they are facing, and help them think about why other people think and act the way they do.

This will help students learn how to practice empathy and how to be more caring and compassionate when they face difficult issues and situations.

According to me mentor should be understanding, who can understand us easily, if sometimes we do not have words to explain our feelings, he or she can feel our emotions.

  6. Mentors are like hiking guides.
Understanding:-They haven’t always experienced the same paths that we have taken, and they shouldn’t spoon-feed answers to us even if they have. Instead, they need to help mentees overcome their challenges without taking the reins directly. This comes back full-circle to the communication skills – in the form of Understanding.

  7. Responsibility is an important trait .A responsible person will do what needs to be done, as matter of principle. They will rise to a challenge, and complete a task, and one can count on them. It is easy to do what we want to do. And often we will do what we don’t want to do, but with an undesirable attitude. Responsible people are not ruled by their emotions. They are mature and not moved by “I don’t want to”, “ I don’t feel like it”, or “Iam too tired”. Also, they are not procrastinators. Iam not always responsible… Only for that which I have determined is very important. A truly responsible person, does not necessarily decide where they will or will not be responsible. Instead, always…Responsible.

  9. According to me the ultimate goal of the mentor is to establish the trainee as an independent researcher. Mentoring responsibilities include sharing knowledge and skills, overseeing the trainee’s work, helping the trainee to make contact with other researchers and assisting with career counseling. In order for research to proceed in a productive and professional manner, mentors and trainees should be aware of their responsibilities to one another. Mentors should treat trainees with respect and should clearly articulate what the expectations are for completing a relevant task. Correspondingly, trainees have academic and ethical obligations to their mentors.

Mentors should act responsibly and conduct research in a competent manner, which can help to impart valuable lessons to future professionals. As best as they can, mentors should clearly articulate expectations and foster an environment where communication is encouraged. As appropriate, mentors might develop with their trainees a timetable for completing specific objectives. Written progress reports could be considered in order to help ensure that there is ongoing communication between a mentor and a trainee.

  11. One of the key responsibilities of a good mentor is to provide guidance and constructive feedback to there mentee. This is where the mentee will most likely grow the most by identifying their current strengths and weaknesses and learning how to use these to make themselves successful in the field.

  12. The keys to establishing a successful mentoring relationship includes creating a relationship of trust, clearly defining roles and responsibilities, establishing short- and long-term goals, using open and supportive communication, and collaboratively solving problems. According to me following points have more value.

1.)Trust- Develop a relationship of trust. Relationships need to be built before any effective mentoring can take place. An environment of trust and mutuality must be established. It is important for the mentor and mentee to become acquainted with each other.
    4. Respectful – Mutual respect in the classroom encompasses more than the interaction between students and the teacher. An atmosphere of mutual respect means that students also treat each other properly. The result is a classroom where more learning takes place as students feel safe, motivated and, of course, respected.
    9. Responsible –
Clearly define the roles and responsibilities of both the mentor and the mentee. Typically, a mentee is more receptive to feedback if he or she feels like an active participant.

Someone rightly said, “Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.”

  18. According to me all the nine traits are essential to be a good mentor. But the one which is the most essential to be acquired is a sense of responsibility.

Being responsible means being dependable, keeping promises and honoring our commitments. It is accepting the consequences for what we say and do. It also means developing our potential. People who are responsible don’t make excuses for their actions or blame others when things go wrong.
